How to Read a Supplement Label Like You Know What You’re Doing

Supplement labels are designed to be skimmed, not read closely — bold claims up front, the actual dosing details in small print. If you want to know whether a product is worth buying, here’s what to actually look at.

Watch for “proprietary blends”

A proprietary blend lists ingredients but hides the exact amount of each one behind a single combined total. That’s a red flag: it often means the effective ingredients are underdosed and padded out with cheap filler ingredients that sound good on the label. Look for labels that disclose the exact milligram amount of every active ingredient.

Compare doses to actual research

A lot of products include an ingredient at a dose too low to match the studies that made it popular in the first place — enough to put it on the label, not enough to do anything. If a product doesn’t disclose doses, or the doses look suspiciously small, it’s worth a second look before you buy.

Check for third-party testing

Third-party testing means an independent lab — not the manufacturer — verified what’s actually in the bottle, including screening for banned substances and contaminants. This matters most for anyone who competes in tested sports, but it’s a good baseline signal of quality for anyone.

Ignore the buzzwords

“Clinically proven,” “maximum strength,” and “advanced formula” aren’t regulated terms — they don’t require any evidence to put on a label. They’re marketing, not information. The ingredient panel is the information.

Every product we sell lists exact doses, skips proprietary blends, and is independently tested for purity and banned substances. Browse our lineup to see labels done the right way.
